Electroless Nickel Plating and Industrial Applications

Electroless nickel plating is used in numerous industrial applications because of its high corrosion resistance. Nickel plating is often used on automobile components, hardware tools, light fixtures, door handles and plumbing components.

As specialists in the electroless nickel plating process, NiTEC have state of the art technology for electroless nickel coatings. We can provide electroless nickel coatings that are very functional and useful for many different applications in a variety of industries.

NiTEC’s electroless nickel coatings are popular for the following reasons:

  • Uniform thickness regardless of component geometry
  • High corrosion resistance
  • Excellent wear resistance
  • High surface hardness
  • Natural lubricity

Replacing Hard Chrome with Electroless Nickel Plating

A great feature of electroless nickel plating is its hardness. Hardness values for electroless nickel deposits are in the range of 450-750 VHN, depending on the phosphorous content of the deposit.

Another great feature of electroless nickel plating is wear resistance. It’s often assumed that hardness is synonymous with wear resistance, and depending upon the wear mechanism applied, this is true in some cases.

Hard chrome can be used when it’s important for the surface to be hard and wear resistant. The advantage of this is that it is very hard, in the region of 800-1100 VHN. The downside, however, is that as the deposit is applied electrolytically, the result is an uneven coating. This means the surface may need post plating machining.

With electroless nickel plating, the surface is guaranteed to be uniform. And although the hardness value isn’t as high as chrome, this can be overcome by using heat treatment.

Hard chrome tends to soften with heating, but all types of electroless nickel plating can be hardened by using heat treatment. In fact, with the right heat treatment, some electroless nickel deposits can be harder than 1000 VHN, making the hardness of electroless nickel plating comparible to that of hard chrome.

As well a electroless nickel plating, we also specialise in diffused nickel plating finishes, copper plating as a process, shotblasting and heat treatment.

Electroless Nickel Plating Experts Increase Component Life in Subsea Conditions

Electroless nickel plating specialists NiTEC work closely with their customers and suppliers, and have developed a number of different types of treatments and techniques in metal plating services.

NiTEC enable metal finishes and metal coatings to be applied to a wide range of component types and environments, ranging from the desert to arctic conditions, to the middle of the ocean, above and beneath the waves.

NiTEC have recently developed SEATEC 100 which can sustain harsh marine conditions for thousands of hours. This level of performance is unprecedented within this industry.

SeaTEC 100 is a cost-effective answer to extending the life of mild-steel operating in a marine environment.

SeaTEC 100 protects mild steel from salt spray corrosion for many hours. Developed and tested by our specialist team, this product is a new and exciting innovation within the engineering industry, and is ideal for use in sub-sea conditions.

Features of SeaTEC 100

– Increases the strength of items such as pipeline connectors -when the material is at it’s weakest level.
– Tested to withstand salt spray conditions for over 25,000 hours.

Plates metal components, valves and connectors that will be used in a marine environment.

– Available in a variety of colours.

Benefits of SeaTEC 100

– Extends the life of materials such as mild steel.
– Downtime as a result of corroded parts is reduced or avoided altogether.
– The costs of repairing, replacing or maintaining parts is reduced.
– An ideal plating for oil rigs and pipes used to transport oil and gas.
